It’s past time to speak out more forcefully about the nation’s headlong and ill-advised embrace of charter schools. Charter schools may be here to stay, but we need sound policies to ensure that any publicly-funded school is subject to the same scrutiny and the same expectations for serving all students well.

The 60th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education has prompted many to praise the historic decision, but there is a downside to all of this veneration. The more we enshrine the decision and sanctify it as an historic relic, the more we risk overlooking it as a living document with a powerful message for today.
