Board Room to Boot Camp

Maybe you’ve seen “Full Metal Jacket,” “A Few Good Men,” or any of dozens of other popular movies about the Marine Corps. Maybe you’re a fan of “NCIS” and its lead character, Marine sniper turned federal agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Maybe you know a Marine or his or her parents, spouse, or siblings.

However you’ve acquired your information about the Marines, you no doubt think that you’ll never be able to experience firsthand Marine Corps recruit training and find out what makes the nation’s smallest military branch so special.

However, this is not the case, at least not for educators. The Marines offer an Educators Workshop that exposes participants to Marine recruit training. I gladly accepted the invitation to participate, and I am sharing my experience to encourage other school leaders to do the same.
