Communicating Beyond the School Community

When North Carolina’s Guilford County Schools (GCS) launched its first Facebook page last January, the social media site was considered to be an experiment, an add-on to an already crowded communications agenda.
Within two weeks of issuing a local press release with links to the site, however, more than 1,000 followers had signed on. After experiencing similar results on YouTube and Twitter, the district now views social media networks as a critical communications channel.
Like websites, e-mail, and other new information technologies that preceded them, social media are exploding, particularly among the young. If your district doesn’t have a social media presence, the question really isn’t whether you should pursue one, but when.
