Encouraging Parental Involvement

By and large, researchers and practitioners agree students learn more if their parents stimulate learning at home; set proper expectations and boundaries; understand educational benchmarks; and maintain friendly, ongoing communication with schools.

A 2011 Center for Public Education (CPE) report, Back to School: How Parent Involvement Affects Student Achievement (www.centerforpubliceducation.org), highlighted these findings along with a number of successful parent involvement programs that have raised student achievement.

Although public schools face a number of obstacles to fostering and sustaining parent involvement, two major challenges are school communication systems and students’ socioeconomic backgrounds.
